The guy is rational without being a jerk, nor isn't chasing skirts and turning stupid for it.
Yes,there's the girl but it's a partnership and it's clear for me at least that he respects her, and has common sense (the way he handled the situation of the swimsuit is a good example).
Also I appreciate that he cares about his family and is helping them without forgetting his goals.
If I was in his position I would aim for the same thing, it's the best in the long run in a situation like that, you need resources and being strong to survive and protect your people.
